Carol Bryant has held executive positions within the private hospital sector for the past 22 years, the last eleven of which have been as CEO at Westmead Private Hospital .
As Director of Clinical Services in 2000, Carol played a key role in opening Westmead Private. As CEO since 2002 she has not only introduced new services, but has grown existing ones, whilst also overseeing accreditation and strategic planning and generating strong operating performance.
First qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 1975, Carol Bryant spent 12 years with North Gosford Private (1988 - 2000) including fulfilling the roles of Acting Director of Clinical Services and Deputy Director of Nursing, before moving to Ramsay Healthcare In May 2000. Her educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Science (UNSW), a Graduate Diploma of Education (Armidale) and management training through Macquarie Graduate School of Management and Singapore Management University.
Evan Rawstron’s career spans diverse roles in hospital administration, medical regulation, medical training and tertiary education. He brings to Macquarie University Hospital extensive experience in leading and managing organisations in their start-up phase, strong relationships within the NSW health sector and Macquarie University, and a passion for excellence in health care. Following studies in economics, health administration and corporate governance, Evan trained as a health economist, winning the distinguished Brian Abel-Smith Prize and graduating first in his class from the London School of Economics and Political Science. His expertise and professional experience make substantial contributions to our leadership team.
Allison has been a Nurse for over 24 years, working in the private health sector in both Melbourne and Sydney. After completing her Nursing Education degree in Victoria, she completed postgraduate studies in Nursing and Maternity and obtained a Masters in Health Care Administration. In 1995 Allison implemented a new Coordinator of Clinical Care role across the co-located Melbourne Private Hospital. She was subsequently part of the Commissioning Team of Frances Perry House Operating Suites and Surgical Unit on the site of the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. In 2000 Allison took up the Customer Service Manager role at St Vincent’s and Mercy Private Hospital in Melbourne, and was appointed as the Director of Nursing at Frances Perry House in Melbourne the following year. In 2004, she was appointed the Director of Nursing at Prince of Wales Private Hospital in Sydney. She joined Macquarie University Hospital’s executive team in March 2010. Her key strengths include leadership, innovation, flexibility and best practice recognition.
Peter Dodd is Chair of the Board of Directors at Macquarie University Hospital. He has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer of Macquarie University since July 2009. Peter has more than 25 years of senior management experience in both the private and tertiary education sectors. He has a PhD from the University of Rochester and degrees from the Universities of Newcastle and Queensland. Most recently, Peter was Chief Financial Officer of North American Energy Partners, which is a New York Stock Exchange listed construction and mining company operating in northern Canada. Prior to that, he was Managing Director of Access Macquarie, a wholly owned subsidiary of Macquarie University that serves as the link between academics and researchers from Macquarie University and industry. Peter worked for more than 20 years in Investment Banking and was Global Head of Corporate Finance for ABN Amro. He was Professor of Finance and later Dean of the Australian Graduate School of Management at the University of New South Wales, as well as Associate Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago.
Malcolm Irving has been a member of the Macquarie University Council and Chair of the university's Finance Committee since 1993. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters by Macquarie in 1993 in recognition of his service to the university, including his major role in the development of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Malcolm holds a number of directorships and chairs covering the corporate and community service sectors, including Chair of Caltex Australia, Director of Telstra Corporation, Chair of the Australian Industry Development Corporation and Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. Malcolm was elected unopposed as Deputy Chancellor by the Macquarie University Council on 24 March 2000. He was also a member of the St Vincent’s Hospital Board between 1991-1995.
In recognition of the contribution made by Dr Irving to the Macquarie Graduate School of Management, the School has created an annual scholarship in his name, to support an eligible candidate with tuition fees for a Postgraduate Diploma in Management.
Elizabeth Johnstone began her career as an academic teaching literature and communication studies. After further management study, she worked in the Review of NSW Public Administration, leading reviews of policies and practices and organisational change programs. She managed the Strategic Planning and Marketing functions for a services company. While completing a graduate law degree at the University of Sydney she consulted to the State Bank and various tourism and services companies on strategic planning and organisational change. After graduating, Elizabeth joined Blake Dawson Waldron Lawyers, where she worked as Partner, National Director and Practice Head Company Law and Governance of the firm, and was listed as a Leading Legal Practitioner in various Australian and international directories before retiring from the firm. In 2006 Elizabeth was appointed to the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, and in 2010 she was appointed to the boards of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Macquarie University Hospital Operations and the Sydney Writers' Festival. Elizabeth previously served for 10 years as an appointed public member of the Australian Press Council, as a director of the Communications and Media Law Centre and as a founding member of the Australian Compliance Institute. Elizabeth is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and was selected as the Business and Professional Women's Association/QANTAS Business Woman of the Year. She was elected as a member of the American Bar Association's Corporate Governance Committee.
Mark Compton is a graduate in pharmacology and spent the early part of his career in research and postgraduate study in respiratory pharmacology, focusing on asthma at the University of Sydney. He is an experienced CEO, particularly in the public company and health care and life sciences environments. Mark was previously Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of SciGen Ltd, an international biotechnology company with its principal business in biopharmaceuticals.
Mark also held the appointment as Managing Director of Alpha Healthcare Ltd, a publicly listed Australian health care group with operations spanning nine private hospitals. Alpha employed in the order of 1,200 staff and had annual revenues of approximately AU$120 million.
Mark is a director on the national Board of St John Ambulance Australia and is chair of the Board of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. He was a non-executive director of Independent Practitioner Network Ltd (ASX:IPN), an ASX-listed medical services company.
Geoff Brunsdon is a professional company director and is currently Chair of ING Private Equity Access Ltd, a specialist private equity fund management company, which is listed on the ASX. He is a Director of APN Funds Management Ltd, the Responsible Entity for the APN Group’s managed funds, and is a Director of Sims Metal Management Ltd, an ASX listed materials recycling company. Geoff was previously Managing Director and Head of Investment Banking for Merrill Lynch International (Australia). Geoff has extensive experience in the origination and execution of investment banking transactions, having been in the industry since 1980. He continues to provide strategic advice to companies.
He was a member of the listing committee of the Australian Stock Exchange between 1993 and 1997 and was appointed to the Australian Takeovers Panel in 2007, which is a continuing role. He is a Chartered Accountant, a Fellow of FINSIA and a Fellow of the Institute of Company Directors.
Geoff is also involved in several non-profit organisations including as Chair of Redkite (supporting families who have children with cancer), the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists and Purves Environmental Custodians.
