Leading UK prostate cancer surgeon Professor David Gillatt has taken up the permanent positions of both Professor of Urological Oncology and Robotic Surgery and Director of Medical Services at Macquarie University Hospital. Professor Gillatt is recognised as one of the world’s foremost robotic surgeons in the treatment of both prostate and bladder cancers, having performed more than 2000 major resections in his career. He also has expertise in the discovery and optimisation of biomarkers for early prostate cancer diagnosis and prognosis, and in the effect of ketamine abuse on bladder function. Before joining Macquarie University Hospital, Professor Gillatt was Clinical Director of Urology at Southmead Hospital and Medical Director of the Bristol Urological Institute, where he established the Prostate Cancer Care and Research Centre. The centre has gained a national and international reputation as one of the foremost research organisations for urology in the UK. It integrates teaching, research and clinical practice in urology. Professor Gillatt brings this experience to Macquarie University Hospital where he will provide leadership across both the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Macquarie University Hospital in the delivery of clinical services, teaching and research. A key focus will be strengthening Macquarie University Hospital’s multidisciplinary team approach to prostate cancer care that already sees coordinated services engage all relevant specialties with the aim of delivering outstanding patient care. Dr Arianayagam is a urologist specialising in urologic oncology.  Dr Arianayagam is trained in the treatment of all urologic malignancies and has a special interest in prostate, kidney and bladder cancer. He is fully trained in robotic, laparoscopic and open surgery and also treats patients with general urological problems. His extensive expertise in urological cancer and robotic surgery, as well as comprehensive cancer care, bring important skills to Macquarie University Hospital.

Dr Arianayagam graduated from Sydney University and completed urology training in NSW. He then undertook a two-year Urologic oncology fellowship at the University of Miami, US, and is a fellow of the Society of Urologic Oncology. His research interests include the role of stem cells in renal regeneration as well as clinical outcomes research. In addition to operating at Macquarie University Hospital, he has a public appointment at Nepean Public Hospital.

Dr Chi Can Huynh graduated from Sydney University in 1999 and immediately streamed onto Basic General Surgical training in 2000. During his senior years in Medical School he completed a three month research term with Tom DeMeester at the University of Southern California. He was accepted into the Advanced General Surgical training scheme in 2003 and then onto the Advanced Urology Training Program in 2005 where he trained at various institutions including Port Macquarie, Westmead and St. Vincents Hospitals. He was the inaugural robotic fellow when St Vincent’s Prostate Cancer Centre started their robotic prostate program in 2008. Following this fellowship he then spent 18 months in Manchester, UK completing a laparoscopic prostate fellowship. Dr Huynh has interests in erectile restorative surgery and robotic prostate surgery and was the first in Australia to perform a robotic assisted nephro-ureterectomy. He also holds teaching positions with the Rural Medical School of the Australian National University and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Macquarie University.

Professor Howard Lau has been a specialist in urology in Sydney for over 20 years.  He is a Conjoint Professor of Surgery, School of Medicine at Western Sydney University.  He is widely regarded as a key opinion leader for his expertise in minimally invasive urology having performed a number of Australian first in laparoscopic and robotic surgeries.  He has been invited to perform many live surgical demonstrations and lectures in Australia and overseas.  He is a robotic proctor and regularly teaches and demonstrates robotic surgery to other surgeons.  In addition he has contributed in the development of laparoscopic units in many Australian and neighbouring countries.  He has written six book chapters and contributed to over 20 publications in medical literature and he has performed over 2,000 laparoscopic renal operations and over 300 Robotic Radical Prostatectomies.

He specialises in kidney, adrenal and prostate diseases, offering services from diagnosis to treatments with experienced multi-disciplinary teams to provide the best care for his patients.  He was born in Hong Kong and attended Sydney University Medical School.  He received Urology training in Sydney with a fellowship year in Oxford University.  He consults at Macquarie University Clinic in addition to his rooms at Westmead Private Hospital.

Dr Rasiah has a PhD in prostate cancer research and has been a recipient of prestigious research fellowships from the NH & MRC as well as the Cancer Institute of NSW. Dr Rasiah leads a number of research projects at the Royal North Shore Hospital Campus and the Garvan-Kinghorne Institute. Dr Ruban Thanigasalam is a consultant Urological Surgeon, who completed his medical degree (MB BS) at the University of London before moving to Sydney. He completed his advanced surgical training in Urological Surgery in NSW and was subsequently awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Australasian Surgeons (FRACS (Urology)) in 2013. Dr Thanigasalam completed a two-year research fellowship at the internationally recognised Garvan Institute of medical research and the University of Sydney, where he was awarded his Masters of Surgery degree (MS). He was also honoured to receive the John Loewenthal medal by the University of Sydney for his pioneering work on clinical outcomes for patients undergoing treatment for localised prostate cancer. He has published in multiple peer-reviewed urology journals and regularly presents innovative research at international scientific meetings.

Dr Ruban Thanigasalam is trained in General Urology and has sub-specialised in laparoscopic, robotic and laser surgery. He undertook a two-year clinical fellowship in Paris to further specialise in these areas. He was under the tutelage of the internationally renowned surgeon Monsieur Herve Baumert in Paris, who is one of Europe's most highly regarded robotic and laparoscopic surgeons. He was personally trained by Monsieur Baumert in robotic, laparoscopic and laser prostate surgery. Dr Thanigasalam’s research background and overseas training means he is able offer his patients the most up-to-date treatment options which enables them to recover and return to their usual activities in the shortest possible time.
