Dr Farah is an adult respiratory and sleep physician at Macquarie University Hospital and Concord Hospital. He trained at Concord and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals and completed his PhD in the area of airway physiology at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, The University of Sydney. He has extensive clinical experience in the management of airways disease including asthma and COPD, lung cancer and obstructive sleep apnoea. He is a senior clinical lecturer at both Macquarie University and The University of Sydney. His research relates to understanding mechanisms and the treatment of COPD and asthma including novel treatments such as bronchial thermoplasty. He supervises postgraduate students, has published in international peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker at local and international meetings.

Dr Samantha Herath completed her Respiratory and Sleep Medicine training in New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
She has extensive post-fellowship, sub-speciality training and expertise in Interventional bronchoscopy pertaining to thoracic malignancies, having completed a highly competitive interventional bronchoscopy fellowship at the prestigious McGill University, Canada.

 

She has expertise in all interventional bronchoscopic procedures including EBUS and plural procedures. Dr. Herath established the first Radial EBUS and cryobiopsy services in New Zealand and had commenced these services now at Westmead.


Dr. Herath whilst being a highly trained clinician and a skilled proceduralist, also has a keen interest in research. She is currently conducting several multi-centre international trials as the lead investigator, looking at introducing safer and more effective biopsy methods in diagnosing lung cancer, using advanced and minimally invasive bronchoscopic methods, as a part of her PhD at the University of Sydney.


Dr. Herath had published widely in major peer-reviewed journals in all areas of Respiratory Medicine and has won multiple scholarships and grants for her research contributions.
Dr Herath works as a VMO at Chris O’Brien Life House and Sydney Adventist Hospital. Her public appointment is at Westmead Public Hospital.

Dr. Herath will be available for urgent telephone consultation and rapid comprehensive work up of suspected lung cancer patients including performing all diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic procedures including EBUS.

Dr. Herath uses advanced technologies including planning navigation software to locate lung lesions more accurately and improve the diagnostic success and minimise delays leading to early initiation of treatment.

Dr. Herath is a firm believer of personalised specialist care and values in getting to know her patients and involves the patient and the family throughout the decision making process.

Professor Alvin Ing is a Professor, Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MQ Health), Macquarie University. He is also the Sub-Dean (Research), at the Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School, University of Sydney. He has been involved in interventional pulmonology since 1993, when he helped establish endobronchial laser resection and stent deployment at Concord Hospital. He was instrumental in forming one of the first and largest patient databases in this area, and is one of the few physicians in NSW specialising in and accredited in these techniques. 

More recently he has help established endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) at Concord Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital, and has pioneered the use of endobronchial valves in patients with COPD and emphysema (Endoscopic Lung Volume Reduction – ELVR). Professor Ing also performed the first bronchial thermoplasty procedure in NSW, treating patients with refractory asthma. He is performing ongoing research into ELVR and Bronchial Thermoplasty at Macquarie University Hospital, actively supervising PhD students in these areas. He also utilises the new technique of cryobiopsy in the diagnosis and management of intersitial lung disease, proximal endobronchial tumours and peripheral lung nodules. 

He has published his Interventional Pulmonology work in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised seven PhD students. He also has continuing research interests in chronic cough, pulmonary complications of gastro-oesophageal reflux and laryngeal sensitivity in pulmonary disorders.

Dr Ng completed his medical undergraduate studies at University of New South Wales. He has been a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians since 2008 after completing respiratory and sleep training at St George Hospital, Sydney and Auckland City Hospital, NZ. In 2009, Dr Ng was Lung Transplant Fellow at Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane. Following this, he had the privilege of training for one and a half years at the world famous cardio-thoracic institution, Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, United Kingdom, where he developed special expertise in the areas of lung cancer, interventional bronchoscopy, lung fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. After returning to Australia in 2011, Dr Ng was appointed as Staff Specialist at Nepean Public Hospital.

Dr  Ng is a Respiratory and Sleep Physician specialising in interventional bronchoscopy (e.g. endobronchial ultrasound and bronchoscopic lung volume reduction) and pulmonary fibrosis. He is participating in the new pulmonary hypertension service at Macquarie University Hospital (Sydney Pulmonary Hypertension Specialists).
