UROLOGY AND PROSTATE SURGERY

Prostate Surgery

Facing any kind of urological surgery can create anxiety for patients. Traditional open surgery – in which large incisions are made to access the pelvic organs – has been the standard approach. Common drawbacks of this procedure include significant post-surgical pain, a lengthy recovery and an unpredictable and potentially long-term impact on continence and sexual function.

The da Vinci® Surgical System can be used for some complex and delicate urological surgeries, particularly prostatectomies. The nerve fibres and blood vessels that are attached to the prostate gland must be delicately and precisely separated from the prostate before it is removed. The benefits of this technique may include significantly less pain, less complications, a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to normal daily activities.

Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation. Depending on your condition da Vinci surgery may be an appropriate option for you.

Bladder Surgery

The da Vinci® Surgical System can be used to perform cystectomies. A cystectomy is generally performed when a patient has bladder cancer. It is the removal of all or part of the bladder and possibly the removal of nearby lymph nodes and organs that may contain cancer.

If your doctor recommends surgery for bladder cancer, you may be a candidate for a minimally invasive da Vinci Cystectomy. Potential benefits of this procedure include less pain, less blood loss, fewer occurrences of major complications, and a shorter hospital stay. Following removal of the bladder the Urologists at MUH may be able to offer you the opportunity of recreating a NEW bladder.

This operation has been pioneered by A/Prof Varol and eliminates the need to wear a stomal bag/need for an ileal conduit. As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed since surgery is specific to each patient, condition and procedure. It is important to talk to your doctor about all treatment options, including the risks and benefits.

Kidney Surgery

The da Vinci® Surgical System is ideal for both complex and delicate urological surgeries. If your doctor recommends surgery for a urinary obstruction or kidney cancer, you may be a candidate for this minimally invasive approach.

When appropriate, the da Vinci offers the potential of a precise tumour removal and kidney reconstruction. If your doctor is able to preserve your healthy, functioning kidney tissue, this can help to prevent future kidney disease and even dialysis.

Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation. Depending on your condition da Vinci surgery may be an appropriate option for you.
